Last Day - Windsurf Slalom and Kite Freestyle

It has been the last day of the Copa ONA III at El Yaque Beach this Sunday, and again the wind played game, for the last Slalom Races and the Kite Freestyle, while the crowds invaded the small village and gave the Competitors the right motivation for another great show right at the Beach, where the Negus Crew performed another great Reggae Session at the Beach Bar. It should get a very exciting last day, most results could still chance with the last races and the Kite Freestylers still had to fight for their place in the finals.

The Jibe marks were set for another great Downwind Slalom close to shore and the Spectators. Especially the fight between Guadagnino and Estredo for the first place would be more than exciting and if Freestyle woman Yoli de Brendt could stills steel the ladies Slalom crown off Rosmary Salazar´s head.

With good 20 knots the first race was started and Guadagnino had the best start and did not leave his first position until the end. The girls first race became quite difficult as the wind started to drop drastic and neither de Brendt nor Salazar could win that race.

Bigger gear, same story, but at race two of the day Estredo was back on fire and now saved this one with Guadagnino in second. So the last Race of the Competition would decide it all. THis time it was Alexis Carache who got the best start, but Estredo, Guadagnino and also Juan Marino came in flying in his neck and already at the second Jibe mark Estredo managed to get passed Carache and major disappointment came to Guadagnino, when he crashed his last Jibe of the Competition and so also his first place to Estredo.

Yoli de Brendt managed to win the remaining two women races, but still it wasn´t enough to get first place overall, which Rosmary Salazar had secured already a race before.

Time for the Kitesurfers and some Airtime. Could the local heroes strike back after some had to leave the competition yesterday already. Yes, especially Aquiles Zabala and Brunasky held the EL Yaque Flagg up and jumped and twisted their way into the final, together with Tibo Hurtado from Adicora. In the Final Aquiles Zabala showed that he got already quite some Worldcup Experience and with some massive and super radical moves he could win the Kite Freestyle with Hurtado in second and Brunasky in third.

The Price giving ceremony became a major event for the entire Village, it seemed as even every last street dog joined the festivities at the El Yaque Plaza, to celebrate their Local watersport heroes, the sports which made the Village to what it is right now..

FREESTYLE

It is the discipline which made El Yaque famous, Worldcup wise. In the past eight years theFreestyle Worldchampion title went seven times to El Yaque. First three times Ricardo Campello and than four times Gollito Estredo.

But before the Freestylers got the chance to hit the water, the youngest Windsurfers were called onto the water for some Slalom Races. Amazing to see soo many Kids flying over the water with ease. Certainly there is one or two new heroes coming up.

Time for the Freestyle heroes. There are quite some under eighteen ready to at least follow the big footsteps of Campello and Estredo and they were all keen to battle it out and show the crowd who´s Top. The Level of the youngsters was already incredibly high but above all Gabriel Castellar and Toni Paterina are the names to look out for in the near future. Castellar already prooved his amazing skills two years ago but his studies didn´t leave him any time to practise more. Even more fantastic his performance today, with all the latest Moves he pushed Toni Paternina, Deivis Paternina´s little brother onto second place. Paternina just started Windsurfing a year ago and performed great Spocks, Switch Moves and one handed Shakas today.

Time for the ladies. Hard time for the opponents of vize Worldchampion Yoli de Brendt, who already in the first minute of the Heat went far ahead of her opponents, but the fiight for second place became a close call and it was Rosmary Salazar who won second place and american Lindsay followed onto the last step of the podium.

Big Action Time. Not only Estredo and Paternina were about to perform some amazing Freestyle for the crowd and the present TV and media, als former Freestyle Champs as Alexis Zabala or Diony Guadagnino were on fire, but so were youngster Bryan Carillo and Italian Competitor Marko. With very fast and super clean Moves they managed to kick out Zabala and Guadagnino in very close calls, but with all moves executed just perfectly clean and super fast they stayed ahead and went into the big final, where Estredo and Deivis Paternina were waiting. Paternina wanted to give Estredo a hard run for his money and started with some amazing Moves as perfect Skupo, Airfunnel or Airflakas and Shaka Flaka, but Estredo was just unbeatable by doing everything just much higher, more aggressive and faster, plus always one handed or even without hands at the sail. With massive Shaka Flakas, Airfunnels and Airflakas he secured his win of the 2011 Copa ONA Freestyle with Deivis Paternina in second and italian Marko in third.

Right after the Windsurf Freestyle, the Kiters were called to get ready for their trick time. Due to the time they could only finish their first round Heats or the men and women fleed, which means also on sunday there will be some Freestyle.

Time to get ready for a chicken dinner at the Fuerza 6 Restaurant and the big "Baroni one time" Party, by the way also Gollito Estredo´s birthday celebration, at Gaby´s Voodoo Lounge.

El Yaque Slalom Day

It was day two of the 2011 Copa ONA in El Yaque, Slalom Day. Already in the early morning it became obvious that this day would bring some finest Slalom Action to El Yaque, with the wind blowing hard at sunrise and picking up till midday. In the Categories Pro, Open, Juniors, Master and women the Windsurfers would fly around the marks and over the course while in Kitesurf the Open Pro and Ladies devision would fight it out. During the long distance race at day one most Competitors showed some amazing speed already, but today would be a totally different story, with even more wind and the technical downwind Slalom course, where the start and Jibes would be essencial for a succesful race.

The Pro Windsurf Slalom became, as expected a hard battle between Gollito Estredo, Diony Guadagnino and Alexis Carache, with a Juan Marino also pushing hard from the back. Race after race was started and became very exciting indeed with the finish line only few meters from the shore. Estredo had a bad start in the first two races but fought back hard to finish this day of Slalom in first position, followed by Guadagnino and Carache.

The amateur fleed was dominated by Alexis Zabala. The former Freestyle wizzard showed what he is capable of also in Slalom.

The Junior Races saw a one and only winner, Miguelito Brueggeman, who flew around the course with his red sail and nobody was able to stop him.

In the women division Rosmary Salazar and Yoli de Brendt started their fight for the Top place. De Brendt could win one race with the better JIbe Techniques, while all other races went to Rosmary with her Race Kit.

Right after the Windsurfers finished for the day, the sky got covered with Kites and the Kitesurfers started their fight for the crown. Yesterday´s long distance race winner Leo Estredo once again showed that he´s the man with the absolute Top Speed, by winning every single race of the day, followed by Brunasky and Jesus Fernandez.

Venezuelan Surfer women Marvil decided last minute to compete which result in a pretty good decision of her. She was the girl of the day by finishing that Slalom day at the Top Spot.

To finish another great day of Competition a great Dinner and Party was held at the CANOA Restaurant

Long Distance Race

At day one of the 2011 Copa ONA, the 24th of march, the Long Distance KIte and Windsurf Race was scheduled. First on, the Kiteboarders. Quickly the sky was covered with the colourful Kites, ready to pull their Riders into full speed. Long Distance meant almost all the way over to the Island of Coche and back, so around 20 kilometers. Start for the Kiteboarders was close to the shore. Best starting was Leonardo Estredo, Gollito Estredo and Jesus Fernandez and in this sequence they also crossed the finish line, only that Gollito Estredo´s start was a bit to fast and so he crossed the line over early and was disqualified afterwards. Mayor disappointment for the 4 times Windsurf Freestyle Worldchampion, as he inscribed for all Windsurf and Kitesurf disciplines with the goal to win them all if possible. So it was Leonardo Estredo, who could win this Race by far. It took a while before the rest of the fleed also crossed the line.

The starting procedure for the Windsurf Race was set a little different, with a start towards the beach, a spectacular Jibe Mark close to the shore and than all the way out to the outside mark close to Coche Island. Again it was Gollito Estredo, this time on the Windsurf Gear who flew over the starting line first, this time correctly, and with amazing speed he went into the Jibe, in front of Juan Marino, Diony Guadagnino and Alexis Carache, the four Slalom Warriors who battle out the Slalom title all the time. Equipment choice was important as the windspeed changes the further they went out. Unluckily this time the windspeed went down in a drastic way and many Competitors had to struggle to keep the planning, while in the front Estredo and Carache were flying over the course. Estredo was positioning himself in perfect position for a full speed downwind run towards the finish line, but experienced Carache on the bigger gear was already to far ahead and could win this Long Distance Race, with Gollito Estredo in second and Marino in third.

Belkys Lizardo could keep Yoli de Brendt and Rosmary Salazar behind and win the female fleed.

The first day finished with a mexican dinner night at Sharks including Live Samba Show and the welcome party at the Beach Bar
