PWA Freestyle Worldcup Fuerteventura
It has been THE Chance for El Yaque Local, four times Worldchampion and various times Fuerteventura Freestyle Worldcup winner, Gollito Estredo to possibly defend his actual worldtitle and add another trophy to his collection. Yoli de Brendt got the chance in the women fleet to defend her actual 3rd place in the PWA Worldcup overall rankings, but not to defend her second place from the previous year.
With a few light wind and flatwater Freestyle Worldcups in the bag, conditions both El Yaque Locals don´t really like too much, all hope was on this Event, especially when the wind was blowing at full strength in the weeks prior to the Competition.
Unluckily exactly for the five days of Freestyle Worldcup at Sotavento Beach the wind went down and after all it became a pretty untypical Fuerteventura Worldcup, with all Sailors on the largest gear, pumping into moves and heat durations extended to give the sailors more time in these unconsistant winds.
Gollito Estredo still performed very well and went straight into the Single Elimination final, where the actual Tour Leader Steven van Broekhoven would be his opponent. Estredo managed to win the Final with an amazing run and now sat in first position, waiting for a challenger to come up there and fight again for first place.
Yoli de Brendt also sailed very well in even less wind and finished the Single Elimination in third place.
Still everything was possible in the men fleet, would another sailor than Kiri Thode or Steven van Broekhoven make it up into the final, the door would have been wide open for Estredo to his fifth world title, but Thode and van Broekhoven knew how to defend themselves and defended their places and once again it was van Broekhoven who made it up into the final, and with even less wind and the water more flat as in the Single Elimination, he became the favourite of these finals. The first final to sail wasn´t Estredo´s best but in the following Super Final the El Yaque hero fired out his Moves and for the crowds became the winner, but in the end it were some of van Broekhoven´s massive Moves which made the belgium win not only this Event but also his first worldtitle.
Yoli de Brendt managed to hold off danish Xenia Kessler to defend her third place in this Event and the overall 2011 rankings, but than lost against world´s number two, Laure Treboux. For the fourth time it was Sara Quita from Aruba who secured the women worldtitle with outstanding performances.
