PWA Freestyle Worldcup Lanzarote 2011
It has been the fifth PWA Windsurf Freestyle Windsurf Worldcup in 2011 but the first time in many years with only one venezuelan competing. Of course four times and actual Worldchampion didn´t want to miss the 2011 edition of the Lanzarote Worldcup as he could win at this place already four times before, but the rest of the venezuelan Freestylers decided to skip this one and vice women Worldchampion Yoli de Brendt got no chance to compete as it was a men only Event.
The Worldcups at the Canary Islands are well known for its strong winds and waves, conditions which especially Estredo is always waiting for and seems to be unstoppable in, something he would need after some light wind and flatwater contests in the first months of the year. So the daily sunshine and very light winds every morning of the Competition wasn´t really what the venezuelan was looking for but still he managed to sail himself up into the semifinal at day one of the Contest, with borrowed Windsurf Gear, as his own got lost at Madrid Airport. His opponent in the semifinal would be constant El Yaque visitor Anthony Ruenes while in the other semifinals the two friends Steven van Broekhoven and Davy Scheffers had to fight it out for their way into the final. This semifinal of the Single Elimination was the kick off for day two and a very high class kick off with Freestyle at its best and Estredo and van Broekhoven making their way into the final while Ruenes and Scheffers had to be happy with the loosers final, which Ruenes could win and finish in third. Already before the start of the final it was clear that it would become a hot and action packed Heat between the belgium and the venezuelan and it was Estredo who managed to bust us the more radical and higher executed Airmoves in perfection to win this Single Elimination Final, which put him in a comfortable waiting position in the Double Elimination, where all Competitors got their second chance to make it up the ladder and possibly into the loosers final. One who really waited for his chance was actual number one of the Worldtour Kiri Thode from Bonaire and with amazing performances he won heat after heat until he came vs van Broekhoven, who shares the number one Spot with Thode. So this Heat would already decide who would lead the Tour after this Contest, while the only chance for Estredo to defend his worldtitle was to win this Event. After another amazing Heat it was the big belgium Rider who could win the Heat and go one more time into the Final against Estredo, who knew that he had to sail a perfect Heat to also defend his number one Spot in this Event. And so he did, Estredo busted out some unbelievable Airmoves including fully planning Pushloop and a super high Airchachoo plus some very technical double Moves to leave no doubt that he would remain the king of Lanzarote.
The prizegiving was held right after the Sailors came back to the Beach in front of the crowds which had supported this Event throughout the past four days.
Next up will be the Gran Canaria Wave Worldcup with Wave vice Worldchamp Ricardo Campello, while Estredo might not be able to take part, as he hurt his shoulder during the Lanzarote final.
El Yaque News will report also about the PWA Gran Canaria Wave Worldcup
