Where do the birds go
That Isla Margarita is a pretty windy place, the Cocktails are delicious and affordable, beautiful Beaches can be found all around the Island and the international Airport is easy to reach are well known facts about the southern caribbean Island, but not only ornithologists or bird fanatics have already witnessed the immense swarms, easing low over the caribbean waters each morning and again before sunset and even one or the other Wind and Kitesurfer had already the privilige of sailing right inbetween of hundreds of Pelicans, Seagulls, Ospreys and Frigatebirds. But why those birds go west in the morning and east in the afternoon and where do they go ?
A little easterly of Playa El Yaque and right between the Airport of Porlamar the Lagoon "Las Maritas" is located and surely there you can see quite some of the over 1300 types of birds which inhabit the Island. Especially at Sunrise the Avefauna becomes active, but while most of those birds stay in and around the Lagoon, those who prefer to have fish for lunch, start their short journey to the westerly located Laguna la Restinga where they find their alimentation of the day, just before they buy their ticket for the way back towards east for the night to rest.
The very special flying and gliding skills, the way how these immense quantity of birds interact to save energy and enjoy their flight seems to be fascinating to anyone. The swarms have become part of the El Yaque life many years ago and surely without having the swarms passing by during happy hour, the cocktails might only be half as good
